The Thomas Jefferson Discussion Group
of Orlando, Florida

Meeting No. 50 - August 23, 2005
Holiday House Restaurant, Orlando, Florida

THIS MONTH'S TOPIC:
JEFFERSONIAN DEMOCRACY IN AN ISLAMIC STATE

I’m planning on inviting Muhammad Mursi of the Islamic Society of Central Florida to our September meeting. Imam Mursi was good enough to speak to our group in 2001, soon after 9/11.

For this month’s meeting I would like to discuss an agenda for September including:

  1. The relevance of a Jeffersonian democracy in an Islamic state. Virtue through free will versus order through the removal of temptation. What does the Koran teach?
  2. The Imam’s impression of the war in Iraq.
  3. Is the lack of a central authority interpreting the Koran (compare the pope’s supreme authority in establishing church law) a prime element in permitting extremists to “highjack” Islam.
  4. Is there any chance of a new Koran emerging, as a New Testament evolved from the old. (From “an eye for an eye” to “love your enemy”).
  5. The welfare of the Muslin community in Central Florida.
  6. Other areas the group would like to discuss with Imam Mursi.
